I made this for my cousin to show her how I do my makeup. I figured I’d share 🙂

Read This If You Feel Like It’s Taking You Too Long To Move On

Not just for romantic relationships

Thought Catalog

Jörg Schubert Jörg Schubert

Everybody seems to have a different rule about how long it should take you to get over something. If it’s a relationship, they tell you half the length of it. If it’s a loss they tell you approximately a year – long enough to go through each special occasion when you’re used to having them by your side. We use language like ‘moving on’ and ‘letting go’ as though they’re actions as simple as shutting a door and physically walking away. We uncurl our fingers and drop whatever we are holding – that’s letting go, right? That’s all it takes?

I don’t think I’ve experienced a single loss in my life that I’ve gotten over in the time frame that seems to have been allotted by society as ‘acceptable.’ And I suspect that I’m not alone there. It is not human nature to let go. We are, at…

A Good Person

I’ve been doing a lot of thinking lately about what it means to be a good person and a good friend. For a long time, I believed that the mark of a good person was the number of friends she had. A person’s ability to “get along with everyone” meant she was a good person. This mindset never seemed like a bad thing to me until recently. I’m realizing now that I’ve spent the majority of my life scrutinizing all of my decisions based on what other people would think of them.

For a variety of reasons, I’ve grown into someone who is insecure and unsure of herself. It was probably sometime in college that I developed a habit of picking one person who I believed to be a really good person so I could model my decision making process on theirs. Doing this put that person on a pedestal and it made me need that person’s approval. When I didn’t get it, it was extremely upsetting to me.

These days, I’m trying to reframe my thinking. I want to focus on my relationships with people who accept me for who I am, so I don’t feel the constant need for approval and the nagging doubt that I’ve done the wrong thing that goes along with that. I am trying to be more confident in my thoughts and my own judgments, without needing to “check in” with other people to confirm that I’m making the right decisions.

It’s tough to change the way you live your life, but as always, things are a work in progress…

My Secret(s) to Pretty Nails

You wouldn’t know it by looking at my blog, but I really love nails, makeup, hair, fashion, etc. As the title suggests, this post is all about nails!

When I was younger, I used to change my nail polish about once a week. I was kind of a perfectionist about it, so it became sort of therapeutic for me to focus my mind on something for awhile.

That was all well and good when I had tons of time to spend doing my nails, but as I got older and went to college, I had less time to devote to the craft. I wouldn’t have enough time to put in the attention I needed and the results were not up to par, which annoyed me. For a time, I stopped wearing nail polish altogether. Over past few years, I don’t think I’ve been seen without polish, but I can’t say that it has always looked nice since I would change it maybe 1-2 times a month.

Lately, I’ve taken it back up. My nail polish is barely even chipped, if at all, when I repaint it. It’s not that I have more time or less to do than I did before (quite the opposite, in fact). This revival can be attributed to two words: Nail Envy. Continue reading

Hi :)

Things have been pretty silent on this blog, but no worries…I’m alive and well! Still trucking along with school and gearing up to student teach pretty soon. Eek! I’m terrified, but I know the experience will help me to feel better prepared to take on my future! 🙂 Anyway, here’s what I’ve been up to: Continue reading

How I Studied for the CSET

I have been meaning to write this post for a while, but it didn’t feel appropriate to write about it until I knew for sure that my study techniques yielded results. I am extremely pleased to say that I PASSED THE CSET!!!! Whew. What a load off my mind. Everybody prepares for these things a little differently, so what works for me may not work for you, but I’ve compiled a few resources that I think other people could find helpful. Keep in mind, I took each subtest separately (one every other week), so I don’t know if this kind of studying would work for someone who is taking it all in one go. My brain definitely felt overloaded with information each time I went in to a test. Continue reading

Same Love

Last night was the last night of my math instruction class. To celebrate, some of my classmates and I went out to get some wine at The Cheesecake Factory. By the end of the night we began talking about an issue that has been on the forefront of many people’s mind these days: gay marriage/gay rights.

Real Teaching!

I probably don’t need to keep saying it because it seems like this is just going to be a fact of life for me, but life has been pretty hectic. The good news is that throughout all the chaos I have had such great, new, and rewarding experiences. Most notably, this week I taught my first lesson to real kids! I’ve “taught” mock lessons before in classes, but my “students” were always my fellow classmates. I also got to do a little learning center with another small group of kids.

Yesterday, I got to teach a lesson on writing algebraic expressions to a class of 6th graders. As I mentioned in my other post, I was previously doing observations in an 8th grade algebra class. I also previously mentioned that I would elaborate more on co-teaching. I don’t really want to go too much into that because I am way more excited about my recent teaching experiences, but it’s definitely worth mentioning.  Continue reading

I Love [the Idea of] Co-Teaching

I am an easy sell. I’m very easily convinced by marketing tricks. If an advertisement tells me one product is better than another, it might be enough to make me form an opinion about something about which I was previously indifferent. Because of this, I try to be very careful when I make decisions. Continue reading

Technology in the Classroom

We all know that technology advances quickly. In terms of education, it’s so exciting to see all the new tools that are constantly coming out to enhance a student’s educational experience. There is so much potential to address all the different learning styles and potential difficulties that students have. That being said, with all of these opportunities and tools, it’s definitely possible to make poor use of them. Continue reading
