A few months ago, I took a Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) class, which was honestly one of the most transformative experiences of my life so far. I am really lucky I had the opportunity to take it and that I was brave enough to take advantage of it. I haven’t said much about MBSR on here because a lot of what I’ve discovered sounds really obvious when I try to put it down in words. Part of that is because it sounds like a lot of cliche sayings that we’ve all grown accustomed to hearing for our whole lives. Listening

I discovered the Green brothers when I was studying for the CSET. They make some really amazing science and history videos on their Crash Course YouTube channel. I started to follow their Vlogbrothers Channel shortly afterwards because I like listening to them speak. This morning, Hank uploaded a pretty short, but insightful video called “On Lives and Mattering”. His call to action was basically to take some time to listen without responding. Love For All

I hesitate to write about this, because I try to avoid conflict when I can. However, I feel I have no right to complain about the state of the world I am living in if I do nothing to try to change it by speaking up. Call me young or naive, but at this point in my life I am trying not to let fear dictate the choices I make.

I’d venture to say most people have at least heard of Jesse Williams’s acceptance speech for the Humanitarian Award at the BET Awards recently. I spent this morning watching his speech and then reading reactions to it. One response was a beautiful poem by Alice Walker. Another response was a hate-filled tirade by Stacey Dash, ironically accusing Jesse Williams of being hateful. I won’t link that here, because I only want to spread positivity in this space. Based on numbers alone, I would say that a 72 year old woman would have a clearer idea of whether things in this country have really improved for Black Americans than a 49 year old woman. Call me crazy, but I trust the opinion of a woman who truly lived through the Civil Rights Movement.

A Healthy Mind

This past year or so has been a year of “restructuring” in my personal life. I have had to reevaluate what my priorities are and what kind of person I want to be. I’ve spent the majority of my life being a people pleaser, measuring my success by what other people thought of me and never making decisions without making sure other people approved first. I think being conscious of other people’s thoughts and opinions can be good, but I was at a point where I had a lot of trouble making any decisions independently. Thankfully, I am married to a man who has always wanted me to be strong in my opinions and has encouraged me to think for myself. It is ironic that getting married has made me more independent than I can ever remember being. Continue reading

Current Skincare Favorites

I will continue my fitness tracker story in a bit, but I really wanted to review some beauty items because they are more exciting to talk about 🙂 I’ve grown up with pretty oily skin, so I have always focused on oil control products. A girl at Sephora told me that the redness she saw in my skin indicated to her that I actually have dry skin, and my skin is overcompensating by producing more oil. I rolled my eyes at her (in my head), and continued to buy an oil-controlling product. Then my skin got SUPER dry and it is still recovering. I should really stop being so stubborn. Fitbit Saga Pt. 2

Alright, so to continue on with the Fitbit story I started here, eventually my Fitbit One went on a tragic trip through the washing machine. Sadly, it did not survive. This was around the time fitness trackers were dabbling in the “wristband style”. At this time, I was thinking about getting a Fitbit Flex, but I was so used to being able to get information quickly from the display on the Fitbit One. When the Fitbit Force came out, I thought it was a great option.

So much of what we see with problem dogs and their behavior, is that people have unintentionally reinforced and encouraged the wrong stuff. And of course, none of us want to intentionally mess up our dogs (even though many of us – including your’s truly have). So here’s a little list of reminders that we’ll call the “don’t do”, or “watch out for” list. Keeping these in mind, and doing your very best to avoid these common dog/owner traps will go a long way towards you having a great relationship, and enjoyable life with your dog.
-Trying to love a badly behaved dog better. (Guaranteed to make a bad dog worse)

-Coddling, nurturing, babying an insecure, nervous dog. (The very best way to deepen insecurity, and to ensure a neurotic mess of a dog)

Back to Blogging

Recently, I have been pretty hooked on some YouTube channels. I’m most interested in the makeup reviews/tutorials. I find myself easily swayed by advertisements, but I know this about myself so I feel like it makes the most sense for me to do a little “research” before I purchase something. There are so many products out there, but there is also so much information at our fingertips. It’s amazing!

Anyway, I realized that I generally like to watch YouTube reviews or people’s unaffiliated blog posts when making the decision to bite the bullet and try a product. I don’t think I will get nearly the same volume of hits on this blog, but I figured it was worthwhile to pay it forward and put information out there in the universe when I try something. I’m all about helping people!

Part of me really hesitates to continue working on this old blog rather than starting fresh with a new one. So many things have changed since I was regularly blogging here. In a nutshell: said goodbye to old friendships, said hello to new friendships, started teaching, got engaged, bought a house, got a puppy, got another doggy, got married, etc. It has been a rollercoaster of emotional changes in my life over the past few years with some of the highest highs and the lowest lows. That is a really cliche way of describing it, but I don’t know how else to express it. There have been so many life developments that this blog doesn’t really feel like a reflection of who I am, what I’ve been through, and what I think, but that’s okay. Many things I used to believe are no longer true, for the good and the bad. I suppose I named it “A Work in Progress” for a reason. My life and this blog will never be perfect, and that’s alright by me.

So basically this post is my very long way of saying that I intend to write something in the near future that I hope is helpful, but I have not written anything helpful yet.
